“Girl on the balcony”, Victor Borisov-Musatov - description of the painting

The girl on the balcony is Victor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov. 77 x 50 cm

This painting, whose first name was “On the Terrace,” was never exhibited during the life of Victor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov. The artist’s wife, after his death, handed her over to the Radishchev Museum of the city of Saratov. Art historians believe that it was written by a master after meeting with the work of the Impressionists during their stay in France, and in style it is very reminiscent of their work.

Bright summer day. The spacious wooden terrace is flooded with midday sunlight. Near the fencing of the cross slats painted white, a young girl sits in a dress of pale cream fabric with small pink and purple bouquets. A narrow bodice, long sleeves and a wide skirt emphasize the fragile figure and slim waist of the young lady. With her left hand, she holds a bluish-turquoise shawl with rare dark purple flowers draped over her shoulders. Smart black heeled shoes peek out from under the skirt.

Sunlight with golden highlights lies on the chestnut curls laid in the hair, illuminates the delicate skin with a pale blush. Easy graceful turn of the head. Facial features are only outlined by the artist, but this is how we recognize the type of spiritualized “Musatov girl”. Exalted and a little detached, dreaming of something of her own, she seems to be an elegant porcelain figurine.

Light clouds float across the azure sky. Behind the terrace, a riot of greenery - through the dense foliage of dark blue-green, grassy, juicy malachite and light emerald shades, dark tree trunks barely glimpse. Drawing them, the master applies paints in small strokes, creating the effect of gentle trembling of leaves.

Cold smoky blue and ash gray halftones contrast with warm beige and creamy colors, conveying a play of light and shadow.

Fuzzy outlines, slightly blurry colors of the terrace and dresses give the work a shade of unreality. Filled with light, very poetic, the picture envelops with warmth and tenderness.
